  1. THE Must Have Collection of the best of the mid-'60s Red Bird and Blue Cat girl groups 5 Star Review

Posted by on Jan 24, 2013

Jerry Lieber & Mike Stoller – the writers of everything from “Hound Dog” to “Along Came Jones” – formed the labels Red Bird and Ble Cat in 1964. Although only in existence for two years, 11 of the company’s first 30 singles reached the U.S. Top 30. Here are 12 of the best, including the chart-toppers “Chapel of Love” and “Leader of the Pack.” Other standouts from 1964: “Remember (Walkin’ in The Sand)” (reached #5), “I Wanna Love Him So Bad” (#9) and “People Say” (#12). From 1965, “The Boy From New York City” (#8), “Iko Iko” (#20) and the magnificent surf rock classic “New York’s A Lonely Town (When You’re The Only Surfer Boy Around)” (#32). This album is pure mid-’60s magic. Only minor drawback: Sun should have reused the excellent original cover this collection came in when first issued on LP. The music, though, remains sheer effervescent girl group fun.
